Exploring Burma’s Bookshops: City Books
Not quite a bookshop but rather a few racks of mixed books and magazines in the most prominent supermarket chain in Myanmar. Imagine a Tescos if someone had just thrown a bunch of randomn books onto a shelf and said There you go.
City Books has been referenced more than once as another outlet that will put the final nail in the coffin on physical bookstores in Yangon, but they are far away from the decimation caused by Tescos and Asda to UK bookshops in the late 90s.
If you do happen to be shopping for food and fancy a book, the newest branch of Citymart in the basement of Sule Square does have a better selection that others. The rack on the right, nearest the entrance usually has a couple of Burmese novels translated into English and published by Seikku Cho Cho, my favourite publisher. City Marts main centre in Dhammazedi road has also just opened a dedicated bookshop called, weirdly, Safari.
Open: Daily from 9.00 am to 10.00 pm.
