Sadaik Short Reviews: Burmese Family
Mi Mi Khaings memoir still stands as a classic of Burmese non-fiction, though its been 70 years since its initial publication. A multi-generational memoir, it follows the life of the authors elite non-typical family …
(the author is of Mon descent, married into a ruling Shan Saopha dynasty, her children in altogether different Military dynasty in the 1960s) in the pre-war era. Rightly known for one of the first depictions in English of the life of women in a Burmese household, the narrative can at times seem dated, yet as a record of life at the end of empire its importance cannot be understated.
